I smell hope in future countdowns... (Week of 1/21/2023)
Hello everyone, and welcome back to another countdown post. What a week it's been for me, I'm now an intern at the Miami County Engineer's Office in Troy, Ohio. That job has been going well for me so far, I'm doing a lot of field work... oh yeah, there are terms in this description that some people won't understand, so I'm just going to get into it. This was a pretty interesting week, we had five debuts, and the last time we had that many was in August 2022. Here are the songs that left this week:

All right. First up is DJ Smallz 732 and his remix of Players by Coi Leray. I usually like EDM remixes more than the originals, and this is no exception. Coi Leray sounds pretty good here and the production from DJ Smallz 732 is super cool and sets the funny vibe hard. At least it debuted the countdown, let's see how long it lasts, please just more than one week.
Tonight, Sam Smith will be the musical guest on SNL, and now their latest single Gimme with Koffee and Jessie Reyez is on the countdown. This is such a fun song. It has some interesting production and all three of them sound great on this. I hope they perform this on SNL.
I'm perfectly fine with good Mimi Webb songs debuting the countdown, per what happened with Red Flags. This might be my favorite Mimi Webb song so far. She sounds a lot better than in her other songs, and the production actually makes sense. Good song.
Our other two debuts are not as great as the last three, but still fine. Miley Cyrus is back with Flowers, and this is just good, but definitely a lot better than Lauren Spencer-Smith's song of the same title, in which OG viewers of the blog remember me hating. Miley sounds pretty good, and the production is interesting, nothing too memorable though. Also, I don't remember exactly where I saw this, but I saw that the lyrics of the chorus are similar to those of the chorus of When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars from 2013, now I can't unsee that.
Well.......... This final debut needs some explaining because everyone says it was a Tiktok thing and I don't think it is, despite being six years old. Last year, The Weeknd released Dawn FM, and it was pretty good. Over the summer, he released How Do I Make You Love Me as a single, and that was one of my favorites from the album. For whatever reason, his label did not think it would do well on radio and mediab-ass, so they decided to service a random song from his 2017 album Starboy called Die For You instead, and that is what we have here today. For the love of God, I will never understand why they made that decision, because How Do I Make You Love Me is leagues better in my opinion. Also, The Weeknd needs a new label so something like this doesn't happen again. As for this song, it's more tolerable than other old songs that were popular this past year, such as Running Up That Hill or Unstoppable, but The Weeknd has a million better songs in his discography, not to mention the production on How Do I Make You Love Me (courtesy of Swedish House Mafia and Max Martin, btw) is a lot better than on this. We shall see how Die For You does...
Hitbound
Gracie Abrams- Where Do We Go Now
The Kid Laroi- I Can't Go Back To The Way It Was (Debut)
Maneskin/ Tom Morello- Gossip
Kim Petras- Brrr (Debut)
Jordi- Hate You
The 1975- I'm In Love With You (Debut)
Diplo/ Kodak Black/ Koe Wetzel- Wasted
All Time Low- Tell Me I'm Alive (Debut)
McKenna Grace- Ugly Crier (Debut)
Fall Out Boy- Love From The Other Side (Debut)
Pink Pantheress- Boy's A Liar
Casey Bishop- Blurry Vision (Debut)
Lonnie- One Night Stand
Up first, The Kid Laroi covered Jiggle Jiggle by Duke & Jones and Louis Theroux. No, not literally, of course, but he put out a 1 minute 35 second song yesterday that is an intro to his upcoming album. This is good. It's in Bb major and he sounds good, but there could be a lot more production here. He's apparently putting out a real song next week, so this might be replaced with that.
Now on to actual songs, starting with another new song from Kim Petras called Brrr. Except this is only a minute longer than what The Kid Laroi put out. This is decent, She sounds fine, but I'm not entirely wowed by this and it's in F# major. Heart To Break and Unholy were both better.
It's been about three years since we last saw The 1975 on here, and I don't think I've ever talked about them on here before. They are back with I'm In Love With You. This sounds a lot like their last Hits 1 appearance, If You're Too Shy. It has some interesting production and whoever is singing (I never remember his name) sounds good. I also like the lyrics of this.
Next up, All Time Low are back on Hits 1 with Tell Me I'm Alive. This sounds like what they usually put out, lyrically and production wise. Alex Gaskarth has amazing singing voice like he usually does, and the production is absolutely amazing here. I want this to be a hit.
Up next is newcomer McKenna Grace with Ugly Crier. This is fine. It is a pop punk song, which is always good. This not a great pop punk song though. This is more forgettable, and I think she could have put this in a different key for it to be better.
Now for the big one, at least in my opinion. Fall Out Boy is back with a new song called Love From The Other Side, their first song in four years. I've never talked about Fall Out Boy on here before, except I briefly mentioned that I saw the Hella Mega Tour they did with Green Day and Weezer in 2021. I've liked Fall Out Boy's music for a really long time, and this new song is also really good. It reminds me of Centuries and Uma Thurman from 2015, both of which are really good as well, and Patrick Stump sounds really good. I hope this is a huge hit.
Lastly, we have someone I've never heard of named Casey Bishop with her song Blurry Vision. This is actually pretty good. She has a great singing voice and the production is really cool. I'm not sure where they found this but I'm glad they did.
We lost 10:35, Never Gonna Not Dance Again, Weapons, Kelly Time, These Nights, and No Love For You. The First three are in the abyss, so hopefully 10:35 and Never Gonna Not Dance Again debut next week. Kelly Time was only alright, so I'm fine with that going. And they fucked over two more great EDM songs in No Love For You and These Nights. Why couldn't these be in the abyss instead of Weapons?
Blurbs:
Our exits were I Ain't Worried, I Like You, My Mind & Me, It's Been So Long, and Super Freaky Girl. I Ain't Worried, I Like You, and Super Freaky Girl were great songs that had great runs on here, My Mind & Me was only good, so I'm fine with that leaving, and It's Been So Long was super mediocre, so I'm glad that didn't stick around after it was the 1TW.
Yeah, we don't need Escapism jumping off its debut.
World's Smallest Violin is likely on its last week here as it fell 11 spots. But it's been here for a long time, so it makes sense.
Calm Down has finally tied its previous peak of 22. Took a bit too long if you ask me.
Snap fell out of the top 20 again. Good. We don't need this on here anymore.
Nonsense in the top 20? Ok, it's grown back on me, so I'm fine with this.
Nobody gets me is also in the top 20, I'd much rather that happen to Kill Bill.
Why is Sex Drugs Etc becoming a thing? This cannot make the top 15.
At least I'm A Mess is there instead.
Ayyo, Eyes On You has entered the top 10 for the first time. Great to see, I'm glad this is becoming as big as Sunroof.
Enough is now at #6, I hope this is top 5 next week.
Ok now for the biggest fuck you of the week. Anti Hero, I'm Good, Star Walkin, and Forget Me were removed from the survey this week. I was hoping one of the last three would hit #1 for one week before they all fell to the bottom of the countdown, but they instead decided to let Anti Hero have one final week at #1. At least this won't break Shivers's record, but 10 weeks is still too many. I don't care what the new #1 is next week.
I guess that does it for me next week, see you guys next week.
NONONONONONOONONONONONONONO MADE YOU PUKE IS GONNA BE #1 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
