My Review on Don Toliver's New Album
Hello everyone, today I will be reviewing Don Toliver's new album Love Sick. Let's get into it.
I'm pretty sure I've only talked about Don Toliver once on here before, that was Honest with Justin Bieber in one of my earliest posts. I have liked a couple other songs from him, most notably Lemonade with Internet Money, Gunna, and Nav, as well as its follow up His & Hers which had Lil Uzi Vert on it instead of Nav. I will be using the same format I have used for the other three album reviews I have done on here, except with the color coding I have been using since the start of 2023. Here we go.
1. LoveSickness
We're starting off with this, and it's just good. He sounds good and it has cool production, but it's a bit short and I'm not sold on the key.
Ranking: Good
2. Let Her Go (with James Blake)
It honestly gets better here, this one makes more sense. The key is an improvement, and he once again sounds great, and James Blake does a great job towards the end.
Ranking: Great
3. Leave The Club (With Lil Durk and Glorilla)
This is really fun. I like the vibe of this. They all do well here. I should also point out the production and key both change one minute before the song ends so it sounds like the first part of Stargazing by Travis Scott, and this is the part of the song Glorilla's verse is in.
Ranking: Great
4. 4 Me (with Kali Uchis)
This is actually not the first time these two have collaborated. They previously did Drugs N Hella Melodies in 2021, but I never ended up listening to that one. As for this, it's really good. He does a great job, and Kali Uchis sounds better than on something like Telepatia or Sad Girlz Luv Money, and if you remember my rankdown from when I first started this blog, you might know I said I wasn't sold on either song. But this is better.
Ranking: Great
5. Go Down (withTisaKorean)
Also a banger. He can always deliver on this type of production, regardless if it is done by Internet Money or not. I could have done without the key change at the end though.
Ranking: Good
6. Time Heals All
Nothing Too Memorable. I'm not too sold on the melodies here, but I still think he sounds fine.
Ranking: Decent
7. Leather Coat
This is interesting. It starts out cool, but we have another key change 1:35 in, then he sounds like he's reading some sort of poem towards the end.
Ranking: Good
8. Honeymoon
So we have this. It sounds like a lot of what this album sounds like, and this maybe is the first time I've heard him rapping in a non melodic way. All right.
Ranking. Good
9. Private Landing (with Future and Justin Bieber)
This comes after his two songs with Bieber Don't Go and Honest, as well as an unknown number of songs with Future, notably that one on Metro Boomin's Heroes & Villains album. And this song is super good, my favorite so far. I like his hook and verse, and Future and Bieber also do a great job. The also sounds more like Lemonade than Don't Go or Honest, and that's a good thing.
Ranking: Great
10.Slow Motion (with Wizkid)
I was expecting this to have an Afropop beat since Wizkid is on it. The production reminds me a bit of that of Creepin by Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, and 21 Savage. Both of their accents go super well with this production, especially Wizkid's.
Ranking: Great
11. Do It Right
All right. The beginning of this gives of barbershop quartet vibes, then it gets more like a Don Toliver song. And the barbershop quartet vibes come back in the background for the hook. But still a good song.
Ranking: Great
12. If I Had (with Charlie Wilson)
This feels a little bit slower than what I have previously heard from him. This goes better with Charlie Wilson's accent. I wasn't expecting anything like this on here, but it's too strange for me.
Ranking: Decent
13. Company Part 3
Now we're going back into normal Don Toliver music. He sounds pretty good and it has cool production. Did he have two other songs called Company?
Ranking: Great
14. Bus Stop (with Brent Faiyaz)
This is fun. It's in Bb major and has cool production, and then both of them sound really good on this.
Ranking: Great
15. Cinderella (with Toro Y Moi)
Fun production, and he does a great job on this.
Ranking: Great
16. Encouragement
For this last track, we have this. He sounds good and there are cool melodies, but a beat would go well on this, here there is not much production.
Ranking: Good
This was a pretty good album, and some interesting features. I'm definitely revisiting the Future/ Bieber one and the Wizkid one, don't necessarily think I will revisit any of the others. See you guys later this evening for more RD reveals and tomorrow for my countdown post.
