Somebody's favorite week in a long time (Week of 2/4/2023)
Hello everyone, welcome back to another countdown post. I have an announcement, it's that I will be extending the due date for my rankdown another week as I'm still waiting on a few submissions. Oh shit, seven exits means seven debuts. First up is South African artist Tyla with her song Been Thinking. The production is super cool here and she sounds good. I'd like to see this do well here.
Next up, we have The Kid Laroi's actual new song Love Again. This is fine. He sounds great and while the production is somewhat cool, it is moderately underwhelming. We will see how this does.
Up next, Gracie Abrams makes her first appearance on the countdown with Where Do We Go Now. I like this one quite a bit. It reminds me a lot of Hardest To Love by The Weeknd, and I mean that as a compliment, plus Gracie Abrams has a great accent. I hope this can be a hit.
Up next, we have The 1975 back on the countdown with I'm In Love With You. This is fine. It's super forgettable but I remember Matty Healy sounding great on this and some cool production. Nothing I'm ever going to come back to though.
Next up, we have Sam Smith and Jessie Reyez both replacing themselves with I'm Not Here To Make Friends. This contains production from Calvin Harris, and I feel like he is going for the vibe he went for in his Funk Wav Bounces albums, which is fine, but I hope he makes EDM songs in the future as well. Anyways, both Sam Smith and Jessie Reyez sound great on here. I hope this doesn't flop hard like Gimme did.
I talked about this in the discord, but never here on the blog. Anyways, I got tickets to see Ed Sheeran in concert for Christmas, and for the first time since then, he is on the countdown. This new song is called F64, and it's pretty good. It's about a friend he lost a couple years ago, but this time, it doesn't sound exactly like Perfect, which isn't good at all. Instead, he tries to rap like in 2 Step and Are You Entertained, and it works, and the production is cool. I want this to do well, but it's Ed Sheeran, so is that even in question?
Welp, whether you wanted it or not (and I didn't), we have yet another old song going viral on Tiktok and becoming a thing on pop radio and debuting in the middle of the countdown, this time it's Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga. Come the fuck on, this is not good at all. I'm not sure what the hell she's trying to do here, but it is clearly not working. Apparently, just like Running Up That Hill, this was on the soundtrack to a Netflix show that I now have no interest in ever watching due to an old song from the soundtrack becoming a thing long after its release. And unlike Stranger Things, I had never even heard of Wednesday, the Netflix show this is on, prior to Bloody Mary becoming a thing, so I don't even know why people are getting so obsessed over this, the only likely explanation being people getting way too drunk before getting on Tiktok and finding this song. Yeah, I hope this song is short lived.
Hitbound (not including Sunday Bests)
Casey Bishop- Blurry Vision
Rita Ora- You Only Love Me
Lonnie- One Night Stand
Zara Larsson- Can't Tame Her
Mckenna Grace- Ugly Crier
Inji- The One (Debut)
Jessie Murph- About You (Debut)
Big Boss Vette- Pretty Girls Walk
Stephen Sanchez- Evangeline
Will Linley- Last Call
Jordi- Hate You
All Time Low- Tell Me I'm Alive
Charlie On A Friday- That's What I Get
Charlotte Sands- Alright
Thankfully, I only have two HB debuts to go over this week, both of which are from artists I have never heard of. First up is The One by Inji. This is super cool. The production is almost a house type and she sounds pretty good. Interesting song.
Our other debut is About You by Jessie Murph. This is also fine. She sounds interesting, not necessarily like Tones And I like Zestpond says. I like the production too. It's only super forgettable though.
We only lost Heartbreak Feels So Good. Goodbye great song, I hope the album spawns more hits.
Blurbs
So our seven exits were Unholy, Star Walkin, I'm Good, Victoria's Secret, Cuff It, Million Dollar Baby, and Gimme. Aside from Cuff It and Gimme, I actually predicted all of these would leave this week. So Unholy, Star Walkin, I'm Good, and Million Dollar Baby were great songs that had great runs, but I wish the first three hadn't left from super high up. Then we have Victoria's Secret, which was not good at all and deserved no success on here, Cuff It, which was too weird and long, and Gimme, which was replaced by another Gloria single but still shouldn't have flopped.
All right, I'm glad the EDM remix of Players is at least getting some success here.
Can Escapism please stop jumping?
On the other hand, I'm obviously very glad Love From The Other Side is in the top 20. This is a great return for FOB, and I'm glad it's getting success.
I said I wanted 10:35 to jump off its debut, and it did!
Can Sex Drugs Etc stop becoming a thing, thank you very much?
Anti Hero is continuing to fall. Good. Get the fuck out of here next week.
Glad Kill Bill is the first SOS song in the top 15 over Nobody Gets Me.
Ok, Weapons does not deserve as much success as its predecessors got. Why is it already at #10?
Die For You (The Weeknd) and I'm A Mess are now in the top 10 as well. I'm more happy about I'm A Mess here than the random track off The Weeknd's 2017 album here.
Lavender Haze thankfully fell two spots. I hope this gets replaced by Creepin in the top 5 next week.
I guess that does it for me this week, see you guys next week.
