Late 4th Of July post (Week of 7/1/2023)

Hello everyone, welcome back to another countdown post. Sorry this is so late, I was doing stuff with my family for 4th of July, and when I got back to Cincinnati yesterday, I realized I left my charging cord back in Columbus, so I went out and got a new one. Up first, we have a song off the Spider Verse soundtrack, this is Mona Lisa by Dominic Fike. If you remember, it was not available on Apple Music when I reviewed the Spider Verse soundtrack, and I finally talked about it when it debuted HB a couple weeks ago. And my opinion has changed since then, I really like the song now. It's quite catchy ad Dominic Fike sounds amazing throughout. It's not as good as 3 Nights from four years ago, but still good.

On the topic of soundtrack sounds, next up we have Barbie World by Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and Aqua (who is only credited because it samples their song Barbie Girl) on here. I want to like this more, but it essentially has similar production to Princess Diana rather than Barbie Girl, with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice rapping over the Barbie Girl melody. The song is still fine, since Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice both do a great job on here. And maybe this will grow on me, who knows?

We have two re-entries this week. One is my favorite song on here, and one is my least favorite, with Waffle's opinions of them being the exact opposite of mine. First up is my favorite, Last Night by Morgan Wallen. Glad it's back, it's a really good song. Now on to my least favorite...

No. No. NO. NO. NO! WHY?!?!? So in case you are new here, my two least favorite types of music are Taylor Swift songs and old songs that go viral on Tiktok years after their release and subsequently become hits on Pop radio. Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift falls into both categories, as it was not on Midnights, but rather on her 2019 album Lover. It was actually on the countdown for five weeks in 2020 because Shits 1 thought it would be the next single off Lover, but then she fucking surprised dropped Folklore, and it never became a single (thank god). So really Shits 1 had no fucking reason to pick up on it. Also, super random side note, but it first debuted the same week as Mamacita by the Black Eyed Peas and Ozuna, so I think we know who really had the better debut that week. Now fast forward to three years later, Cruel Summer is literally blowing up on Tiktok when Midnights is still too goddamn popular, and Radio stations are picking up on it and the stans claiming it is the only song that matters to them and that it is a need for Cruel Summer to be blasted everywhere all summer. Then Hits 1 starts playing it again after it left three years ago, now here we are, the song re-enters all the way up at #9. Completely fucking undeserved. So how's the song? Well, it's your straight up generic bad Taylor Swift song. I've said it before, I'll say it again. The Taylor Swift stanning has gotten completely out of hand. It has gotten completely annoying that every city that the eras tour has come to is doing something to honor her arrival. And guess what Cincinnati did when she performed at fucking Paycor Stadium last weekend? Well, the mayor of Cincinnati declared last Friday Taylor Swift day EVEN THOUGH LIL UZI VERT FINALLY DROPPED THEIR LONG AWAITED ALBUM PINK TAPE THAT DAY! And I'm pretty sure almost every girl I know went down to see BOTH FUCKING NIGHTS of the Eras Tour in Cincinnati and were posting about it on their IGs. I'm so glad I headed back home that Friday to avoid the Taylor Swift bullshit in Cincinnati. I'm pretty sure no one's treating Ed Sheeran's Mathematics tour like this, because no one is talking about that. Anyways, I really hope Cruel Summer is the last Taylos Swift song on here for a while, because I really need a fucking break from her, and I also hope this the last old song that went viral years after its release that I ever hear.

Hitbound
Metro Boomin/ Swae Lee/ Nav/ A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie- Calling (Debut)
Crash Adams- Lucky
Kim Petras- Revelations
Niall Horan- Science
Leah Kate- Super Over (Debut)
Tai Verdes- Sandman
The Band Camino- See You Later (Debut)
Doechii- What It Is
Jelly Roll- Need A Favor
Jain- Makeba (Debut)
Olivia Rodrigo- Vampire (Debut)
D4vd- Here With Me
Coi Leray/ David Guetta- Make My Day (Debut)
Jessie Murph/ Maren Morris- Dumb Ol Stupid Texas
Kali- Area Codes
Benson Boone- In The Stars

I talked about this first debut in my review of the Across The Spider Verse soundtrack. It's Calling by Metro Boomin, Swae Lee, Nav, and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, all of whom have appeared on Hits 1 (while A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie hasn't, he featured on Stack It Up by Liam Payne and the remix of Track Star by Mooski, both of which his verses were edited out of, so those songs still count). So my opinion from when I reviewed the Spider Verse soundtrack still stands. I like Swae Lee's hook, Nav and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie both deliver great verses, and Metro Boomin did a great job producing. I'm glad this is here.

Next up, we have another song from Leah Kate after Hits 1 surprisingly did not pick up on Don't Call Me with Slushii from earlier this year, this is called Super Over. H o l y c r a p. This might be her best song so far. The production gives off the vibes of Classic Zedd music and classic Avicii music, and I mean that as a compliment because both of them made bangers back in the day. Leah Kate does an amazing job vocally and the lyrics are among the most interesting lyrics for a breakup song ever, top that off with the song being in G minor, and you have an amazing banger. Leah Kate, well done.

Next up, we have The Band Camino making their Hits 1 debut with See You Later. This is good, not great. Whoever is singing sounds good and it has interesting production, but it's moderately forgettable. I'll need to listen again.

Oh goodie. Another weird ass party loop with strange chanting that was released at least 7 years ago. Anyways, we have Makeba by Jain on here, and... this is interesting. The chorus is essentially just "Ooohe, Makeba, Makeba ma qué bella/ Can I get a "oohe?" Makeba/ Makes my body dance for you" over and over again, and I usually don't like these kinds of songs (looking at you, Do It To It), but here there are a couple verses, so the song is decent, despite being from 2016. Whatever. You can have your own opinion.

Two years after dropping Sour, Olivia Rodrigo is back with new music, this is called Vampire, and it's the lead single off her album Guts that drops this September. This is pretty cool. It starts off slow, almost like Driver's License or Traitor, but it evolves quite a bit to the point where the second verse onwards is not a ballad at all. Super interesting song.

Lastly, Coi Leray dropped an album called Coi a couple weeks ago, and from it, we have Make My Day with David Guetta, and it wouldn't be a Guetta track without it sampling something, this time, he sampled Pump Up The Jam by Technotronic and Ya Kid K, and that song samples Move Your Body by Marshall Jefferson and Curtis McClain, which is the same song that Muevelo by the Black Eyed Peas and Anuel sampled. Interesting connection. Anyways, the Pump Up The Jam sample on here is as prominent as the What Is Love sample in Baby Don't Hurt Me, and that is no complaint at all. Guetta did an amazing job producing per usual, and Coi Leray does an amazing job on here. Fun song.

We lost 1800 Got Stress, Angel Part 2, Good Times Go, and Tornado, which is unfortunately in the abyss and is going to stay there until she drops something else. And I have forgotten what 1800 Got Stress even sounds like, Angel Part 1 was better than Part 2 (just a heads up, we will be using Part 1 in the Countdown Extras rankdown), and Nicky Youre has done better songs than good times go.

Blurbs
Our exits this week made more sense than last week. This week, they were Heaven, Love From The Other Side, That's Not How This Works, and Favorite Song. I think they all had good runs, although Favorite Song could have done a bit better. That said, I would have taken one of them staying on the countdown instead of Cruel Summer re-entering.

Hold Me Like A Grudge looks like it will have a good bit of success here, that's good to see.

Snooze, meanwhile, falls back down six spots. Couldn't care less.

I'm glad Daylight grew on me as much as it did, because I'd have a much different opinion on it climbing five spots if it didn't grow on me.

I'm In Love With You rebounded, but something tells me this might be gone in the next few weeks.

Popular also rebounded. I'm glad this is living up to its title.

Jaded has really faded on me, so I'm glad it fell six spots.

But I'm glad that 3rd time's a charm for Hapy, which is now at #12.

Not a lot of movement in the top 10, but next week marks one year since Sunroof dethroned Ass It Was. If Give Me A Kiss actually dethroned Karma one year after Sunroof first took the top spot, that would be something, and the trend of an artist's really good first song dethroning a really annoying overrated song on that exact week. If Eyes Closed hit #1 next week, it would be entirely appropriate with me going to see Ed Sheeran in concert. Just please not Cruel Summer at #1 next week.

I guess that does it for me this week, see you guys next week.

  1. Revelations, you will be missed. Science, you won't be missed that much. DILT is the best Hitbound entrant (but it's sooooo hard)
