#1 Recommendation For Hits 1: Robin Schulz/ Sigala/ Zoe Wees- AM To PM
Up first is the first countdown extra to actually debut the countdown since Golden from Kpop Demon Hunters 12 weeks ago, this is Eyes Closed by Jisoo and Zayn. This is really good. Both Jisoo and Zayn sound really good here and the chemistry they have when singing the hook together is rock solid. The song also seems to be about wanting to fall in love in a rather secret way. I hope this is a hit.
This next song is from Justin Bieber's album Swag (so therefore, he replaces himself this week), this is called Yukon. And if I'm being honest, I might actually like this more than Daisies. The beat here is rather catchy and Justin Bieber sounds... interesting, to say the least, but in a good way. There's some vocal effect on this song that makes him sound like Sza of all people, and I actually thought she was featured on this when I first heard it. Plus, this is in Bb major, which only solidifies my opinion on this song. Yeah, surprisingly good song, glad I heard it.
And... to finish off this list of debuts, we have Laufey making her countdown debut with Lover Girl. I'll give it this: This is a little bit better than her HB dropout Tough Luck from earlier this year, but that is not saying a whole lot given that Tough Luck is likely making the dishonorable mentions for my worst list in about a month. The production is a bit odd and doesn't go all that well with Laufey's voice, which still sounds a bit haunted imo. At least the song being upbeat and having decent enough melodies saves me from hating this as much as I should. Again, I still don't get the appeal to her, and I don't think I ever will.
Hitbound:
Tyler The Creator- Sugar On My Tongue
Jonas Brothers- Backwards (Debut)
Camryn Quinlan- Ex Box (Debut)
MGK- Home Bittersweet Home (Debut)
5 Seconds Of Summer- Telephone Busy (Debut)
Jackson Wang- Made Me A Man (Debut)
Selena Gomez- In The Dark (Debut)
Demi Lovato- Let You Go (Debut)
Sienna Spiro- Die On This Hill
Charlie Puth- Changes
Sophia James- So Unfair (Debut)
Emei- Talk Talk Talk
In Color- Headlights (Debut)
Lewis Capaldi- Almost (Debut)
Charli XCX- Everything Is Romantic
Maisie Peters- Audrey Hepburn
Part of the reason that this post is as late as it is is that we have 10 HB debuts this week. First up is Backwards by the Jonas Brothers. This is pretty good. It has an interesting enough beat and everyone sounds pretty good here. I'll take this.
Up next is the first of three random newcomers making their Hits 1 debuts, this is Ex Box by Camryn Quinlan. This is decent. This seems like she is trying to forget about all of her exes, and that's a concept I usually like, but only when the key is right, and in this case, it isn't. This is upbeat, and Camryn Quinlan sounds pretty good. So overall, a decent song that could be better.
If I haven't made it clear enough, Tickets To My Downfall/ Mainstream Sellout is MGK's best era. To commemorate the 5th anniversary of Tickets To My Downfall, he dropped a re-release that contained previously unreleased songs from the era, that includes Secrets, which is a banger, and this song, Home Bittersweet Home. I don't need to explain at this point, this is also a banger. The beat is quite wild here and MGK once again sounds pretty good. So yeah, another fire MGK pop punk banger, I hope it debuts the countdown.
5 Seconds Of Summer are also back with new music, this is called Telephone Busy. This is rather cool. The verses remind me a little bit of those of Miami 2 Ibiza by Swedish House Mafia and Tinie Tempah, and the hook is really cool too, and Luke Hemmings once again sounds quite good here. Fun song, I'm excited for the new album.
Jackson Wang has his first new song on here in a hot minute, this is called Made Me A Man. This isn't exactly my thing. The beat is only decent and Jackson Wang sounds alright, he's sounded better before. This also feels on the slower side. Yeah, not my thing.
Selena Gomez is back after that really mediocre collab album with Benny Blanco from earlier this year, this is called In The Dark. This is honestly her best song in a hot minute. The production here is rather groovy (I checked the credits, Benny Blanco wasn't involved in it) and she sounds quite good here per usual. Super fun song.
The day before this countdown aired, Demi Lovato dropped It's Not That Deep, and from it, we have Let You Go. This is solid. It feels a bit slower than the other three songs I've heard from the album, but there is still a solid beat and Demi Lovato sounds quite good per usual. So I'll definitely take this.
So we have our second of three random newcomers up next, this is So Unfair by Sophia James. This is also pretty good. The beat here is pretty fun and Sophia James has a great singing voice. I'll take this one.
And then we have the third of three random newcomers this week (and second to last debut to talk about), here, we have the band In Color with their song Headlights. This is good. Mikey Piff compared this to something from The 1975, although this reminds me more of Back To Friends by Sombr. So yeah, this has a solid beat and whoever the lead vocalist is (I looked up his name, but unlike with Zak Dossi from People R Ugly, Eric Dangerfield from The Paradox, or Colie Hutzler from Beauty School Dropout, I couldn't find it) sounds pretty good. Interesting song.
Our last song is from Lewis Capaldi, this is called Almost. This is rather good. This is upbeat, I think it's only the second upbeat Lewis Capaldi song I've talked about, the first was Forget Me from three years ago. Although I like that more than I like this. The beat is great enough and Lewis Capaldi sounds pretty good here. Among his better songs.
We lost Boyband, Kiss, Lemonade, Sugar, David's Brother, Gorgeous, Smooth, Wake Up, and Home. The first two were replaced by better songs from the artists who wrote them, and with the exception of Home all the rest of them probably should have stayed on for a bit longer if they weren't going to be on the countdown.
Blurbs:
Our exits were Daisies, Folded, and Love Is Like. Daisies was replaced by a better Justin Bieber song and had been here for a minute, so I'm not complaining there. And Folded and Love Is Like were both lurking towards the bottom of the countdown, so it was probably time for them to go.
Good to see all of last week's good debuts (Bittersweet, Bloodline, and Gone Gone Gone) jumping this week.
Looks like First Original Thought is flopping. Called it.
Man I Need got somewhat of a momentum boost.
Of course Opalite also jumped off its debut. But at least it was only five spots.
I'd be alright if Gabriela was in the top 10 next week.
The Dead Dance is almost in the top 5, hopefully it is there soon.
And that's pretty much it, the entire top 5 held their respective positions from last week.
I guess that does it for me in this post, see you guys in my next one, which should be out later this evening.
