My review on Drake & 21 Savage's new collab album
Hello everyone, today I will be reviewing Drake and 21 Savage's new collab album Her Loss. Let's get into it.
I'm a fan of both Drake and 21 Savage, and they have had some solid collaborations over the years, such as Mr Right Now, Knife Talk, Jimmy Cooks, etc. The last time I did one of these posts was back in June with Post Malone's album 12 Carat Toothache. So here's a refresher on how this post will work: I will be reviewing the album track by track, then giving each track a ranking of awful, mediocre, decent, good, or great. Here we go.
1. Rich Flex
So we have the first song here, and this album is off to a solid start. Some of the lyrics at the beginning remind me of Savage by Megan Thee Stallion. In the middle, it sounds somewhat different from the rest of the album. Nothing too terrible though.
Ranking: Good
2. Major Distribution
The difference between this and the previous song is that there is actually melodies but for the first 45 seconds, then it switches to a more trap sound in a different key here. I like their verses here though. I don't like when 21 Savage name drops Harry Styles two minutes into the song, but it's cool.
Ranking: Good
3. On BS
This one is kind of interesting here. It has some cool production and they both give amazing verses, and it has an interesting, though slightly repetitive hook. This is my favorite so far, althought I could do without that 1 minute spoken outro.
Ranking: Great
4. BackOutsideBoyz
So I'm not sure how this made the album as it's just Drake and no 21 Savage. This is still pretty good though. I like the hook here and he does well.
Ranking: Great
5. Privileged Rappers
Now back to songs with both of them. The production on this one reminds me a bit of that on Laugh Now Cry Later from 2020. also, they deliver great verses. I'm satisfied.
Ranking: Great
6. Spin Bout U
This one might be my favorite so far. It is like First Class, as in there is a sample in the key of Bb major in the background. I like both of their verses here and the hook from Drake is really cool to listen to. This is the song off the album I want Hits 1 to pick up on if they were to pick up on any song off the album.
Ranking: Great
7. Hours In Silence
So this is the longest one so far, at 6:39. The melodies and key this is in is solid, but I think this is a bit too long for my playlist.
Ranking: Good
8. Treacherous Twins
Now we're at the halfway point of the album. This one is kind of cool. The album has got more melodic as it went on, and I mean this as a compliment. I like both of their verses, but I'm not a fan of the key it's in. This seems like something that could grow on me a bit though.
Ranking: Good
9. Circo Loco
All right. I think this one is a bit cool. Again, both of them deliver great verses but the song is in the same key as the previous one. The beat is solid though, so I really shouldn't complain too much.
Ranking: Good
10 P***y & Millions (with Travis Scott)
So they did get Travis Scott on this one track, and... It's not as good as I was expecting it to be. The song feels a bit generic for my liking, and Travis Scott does not come in until halfway into the song, and the production somewhat switches up when he comes in. That said, all three of them do well here. I'd call this decent for now, but it should have been better.
Ranking: Decent
11. Broke Boys
So we now have this, and I kind of enjoy this one. Once again, they both deliver here. The production is more interesting the previous song and it's in a more interesting. Then... it switches up in a much more prominent way than other songs, sounding a lot like Ransom by Lil Tecca in the second half. Not complaining at all here.
Ranking: Great
12. Middle Of The Ocean
Too long, 21 Savage isn't on this, and the production is good but doesn't really suit his voice, but Drake Still does well.
Ranking: Mediocre
13. Jumbotron S*** Poppin
Again, 21 Savage isn't on this, but I think he would do well on it. I 100% like this one since Drake sounds well and it has cool production.
Ranking: Great
14. More Ms
So this was apparently produced by Metro Boomin? Nice. I want to like this more, but I don't think there are any melodies here, but Metro Boomin did well with the production on this.
Ranking: Good
15. 3AM On Glenwood
This is the only track on the album without Drake. Not using this against the song. 21 Savage does well, and the production is somewhat interesting here.
Ranking: Good
16. I Guess It's F*** Me
We have this as this as the final track, and it's not really a great outro, it's slow and 21 Savage isn't on this. Sure, he does well, but they both needed to be here and there should have been more productionwise.
Ranking: Decent
Overall, that was a fairly interesting album to listen to, but there were questionable tracks and a better album (the new Black Eyed Peas album) is being released next week. See you guys tomorrow for my countdown post (which might be somewhat late due to band things tomorrow).
Regarding the solo songs from Drake or 21, it’s not uncommon for rap collab albums to have a few songs that are by only 1 of the artists. I’ve seen this happen occasionally for a few years now.
ReplyDeleteOverall though, nice post
Okay thanks for letting me know, it's just not something I've seen on collab albums I've listened to
