My review on Illenium the rapper's self titled album
Hello everyone, today we will be reviewing Illenium the rapper's self titled album. Let's get into it.
3. Worst Day (with Max)
I first heard of him when he had Takeaway with The Chainsmokers and Lennon Stella, which was quite good. He then had First Time with Iann Dior a couple years later, followed by Story Of My Life with Sueco and Trippie Redd later that year, both of those songs were really good as well. Now, we have the singles off this album, let's begin, using the same format as my other album reviews.
1. Starfall
I guess this is just an intro here, it sounds like a classical melody, at least until one minute in. Then it goes for an EDM turn, but there are no vocals here.
Ranking: Mediocre
2. All That Really Matters (with Teddy Swims)
This one makes more sense. His production makes more sense, and Teddy Swims sounds amazing.
Ranking: Great
3. Worst Day (with Max)
I feel like he is trying to go for the same vibe with all of his songs. I like this production here, and I like Max's vocals.
Ranking: Great
4. From The Ashes (With Skylar Grey)
This one is not really as good as the last two, but still good. His production is good, but it takes a bit of time to evolve. Skylar Grey definitely sounds amazing on this.
Ranking: Good
5. Lifeline (with Jxdn)
This is in the same key as the last two, but goes for a pop punk vibe here. Again, his production is super cool and I like Jxdn's vocals on this.
Ranking: Great
6. Eyes Wide Shut (With Avril Lavigne and Travis Barker)
I briefly talked about this in my Hits 1 catchup post, now I can talk about this in full. This is the first track so far where he co-produced this with someone else, in this case, Travis Barker. This works really well. Illenium and Barker did a great job producing this, and Avril Lavigne does an amazing job vocally. Great song.
Ranking: Great
7. Shivering (with Spiritbox)
So we have this. It's pretty long imo, It starts out like the previous songs, and then in the middle, we get into a dubstep type beat, which is interesting for him. Then it eventually gets back to normal. I like Spiritbox's vocals here, although this contains screaming, which I don't mind.
Ranking: Good
8. You Were Right (with Wooli and Grabbitz)
This is moderately forgettable, but his production works and the vocals are really good.
Ranking: Good
9. Insanity (with American Teeth)
Now on to the song that's been #1 on Trey's crownnote chart as of recently. I really like this, although not as much as Trey does. The lead vocalist on American Teeth sounds really good, and Illenium did an amazing job producing. I'm not really sold on the key just yet.
Ranking: Great
10. Drwn
Again, like that first track, it has no vocals. This doesn't really classify as a song.
Ranking: Mediocre
11. Other Side (with Said The Sky and Vera Blue)
This is really good. He and Said The Sky did a solid job producing, and I like Vera Blue's vocals. Super fun.
Ranking: Great
12. I Want You 2
This has some vocals his production is cool, but it's just I Want You To Stay over and over again
Ranking: Decent
13. With All My Heart (with Jvke)
I've been enjoying this one lately, and I'm quite surprised Hits 1 never picked up on it since they usually like Jvke. Anyway, the production on this is different from the rest of the album, and Jvke delivers one of his best vocal performances here.
Ranking: Great
14. Back To You (With All Time Low)
This is actually not All Time Low's first EDM song, they did Ghost Story with Cheat Codes a couple years ago. Anyways, this matchup works well. His production is really amazing, and Alex Gaskarth does a great job here vocally.
Ranking: Great
15. Nothing Ever After (with Motionless In White)
I'm liking these merged EDM/ pop punk songs on this album. This is no exception. I like his production here and I like the vocals from Motionless In White, or the lead singer if this is a band.
Ranking: Great
16. Love Me A Little (with Nina Nesbitt)
We finish the album with this: A fun song that sounds like the early tracks from the album but the same key as the previous two songs, and then Nina Nesbitt sounds great on this.
Ranking: Great
So this was really good. I know I'm reviewing this thing two weeks after it came out, but this has to do with me being in Europe and this week being my one year anniversary week. Some of these were really good, and I'm definitely revisiting the All Time Low one, and the Jvke one is already on my playlist from a couple months ago, then I will be hearing the Lavigne/ Barker one on Hits 1, which I don't mind. See you guys this weekend for my countdown post (or tomorrow, since I'm doing another countdown re-creation then).
